The potential and propensity in flight of Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) in thelaboratory were measured using a 32-channel, computer-monitored flight-mill system.Females flew significantly farther within a 72 hours flight period than did males. The meanaccumulated flight distance and flight duration of 1-day-old female individuals in atethered-flight test were 41.25±26.84 km and 23.87±8.23 h respectively, whereas formale individuals the same parameters were 23.87±8.44 km and 14.12±3.73 h. The flightability of adults was significantly positively correlated with pupal weight. The flight activityof unmated pink bollworm moths increased daily from the time of eclosion, reaching a peak at3~5 days, and then reduced gradually. All the moths could fly normally at 16~36℃, however, the optimum temperature for flight ranged from 24~28℃, whereas the optimum R.H. rangedfrom 75~90%. Using infra-red video recorder, we observed the emergement of the pupae andrate of moths taking off of pink bollworm. The pupae emerged 7 days after the larva pupated. Most of them emerged in the afternoon. The process lasted for about 25 min. The moths flewfor feeding and they did not move in the day. At dusk, the moths started moving. They movedin order to feed and ovipisit in the first-half night and to mate in the late-half night. At thistime most of them kept still. In the studies of relationship between flight and ovipisition, ovipisition had no effect on the flight ability of 3- and 5-day-old moths that ovipisited or didnot. There was difference between 7-day-old moths that ovipisited and ones that did not. Theflight ability of moths that ovipisited decreased more rapidly. Flight had large effect onovipistion. The ovipisition of different age moths that flew for 24 h declined and hadsignificant difference from that of the unflown ones. However, the preoviposition period of 1-to 7-day-old moths became shorter than that of the unflown ones and the preovipositionperiod of 9-day-old moths became longer than that of the unflown ones. The moths flown for6, 12, 24 and 36 hours at day-1 after emergence began oviposition earlier than the unflownones. The 6 h flight had no effect on the oviposition, but the preoviposition period wasshortest. The 12, 24, 36 h flight had not only significant effect on the oviposition, but alsomade the preoviposition period shorter.
