| Since the "Green Nanjing" project took off in 2002, The City of Nanjing has been making tremendous efforts in greenizing itself. A variety of botanic views have been constructed in this city, with distinctive seasonal appearances. Spring and summer are the seasons for revival, during which the plants are lively and prosperous, whose beauty is relatively easy to be manifested and shaped. In contrast, a majority of plants fade in autumn and winter, which poses a challenge for garden designers. While landscape architecture is an work of art,it should be beautiful for ever. How can we sustain the visual value of plants, in autumn and winter in Nanjing, worthing to studied. This thesis attempts to explore this question, via an investigation on the botanic resources of Nanjing which are visually valuable in autumn and winter, a look into the gardening theories along with relative domestic and foreign practices, and a creation of an evaluation system. The thesis proposes a combinative approach of "Dot", "Stripe" and "Facet" green area constructions, which will be suitable for the local conditions of NanjingThis thesis is divided into six sections to address the above issue:The first section is a summary of my research. It first introduces the concepts of autumn-winter botanic views, then presents the historical and current research activities in China, and finally addresses the purpose and implications of my research. The second section analyses the regional characteristics of Nanjing, including topography, landforms, climate soil condition and natural botanic resources. The third section presents the investigation of the botanic resources with high autumn-winter visual value in Nanjing region, and analyses the gardening application of these resources.
