Setting high yield, high quality and high resistant alfalfa as the long-time breeding goal, some basical research in alfalfa crossbreeding and the initial work conducted in this experiment. First, to reach the goal of scientific crossbreeding and enhance forage yield, quality and seed yield, flowering characteristic of 7 varieties were carried on. Next some earlier work in alfalfa breeding and some comparing observation the characteristic of parents and the F1 had been done.The results as follows:1.One of the experimental results indicated that there were obvious differences (P<0.05) among floret structural characters and location of flower.2.The quantity characteristics of the inflorescence flowers, pods and seeds in only one pod of 7 alfalfa were studied. The numbers of inflorescence flowers, pods, seeds in each one pod showed normal distribution patterns with there frequencies which can be represented by some models.3.The study on flowering habits and daily flowering dynamic changes of 7 varieties of alfalfa showed that the flowers was bloomed only in daytime from 07:00 to 20:00, and the flowering peak was 09:00- 15:00.4.The study on yearly flowering and pods dynamic changes of 7 varieties of alfalfa showed that they had obvious flowering peaks. Guyuan and Guanzhong alfalfa have a stable flowering period. The pod numbers kept stabilization after it reached maximum level. The middle ten days of august is optimum for gathering seeds.5.The study on the growing characters of parents and hybrid F1 showed there were significant difference (P<0.05). Growth rates of first harvest of 7 varieties all follow the same rule. Before branching they growed slowly, and there were accelerated significant from branching period to floral initiation period. After floral initiation period, they entered reproductive growth phase, and growth rates fell down again. The growth peak was between branching period and floral initiation period. The growth rate of 7 varieties all dropped at different degrees from floral initiation period to flowering time.
