Sugarcane varieties ROC22, GT17 and ROC10 were used as plant materials which were brought up in pots for the experiments. The sugarcane cuttings were soaked respectively in 0mg/L,100mg/L and 200mg/L ethepon for ten minutes before planting, and water stress was applied at the young shoot stage(four to five leaves). The purpose is to study the effects of ethephon on the physiological, biochemical and agronomical characters in sugarcane during tillering stage under water stress. The results were as follows:For the physiological and biochemical characters: 1.The ethephon treatments maintained much higher leaf potential(LWP) than the control treatments under water stress; 2.The ethephon treatments promoted the contents of photosynthetic pigment and optimized the ratio of Chl.a to Chl.b. These showed that ethephon promoted the photosynthesis in sugarcane leaves...
