This research work focuses on the implementation and measures of hybrid rice development in Indonesia since year 2000. It is based on extensive fieldwork experience and numerous interviews with hybrid rice experts, government official and policy makers. It systematically studies the current political and economic conditions, technical pros and cons of hybrid rice development in Indonesia. It concludes:1. Key factors for hybrid rice success in Indonesia: Indonesian urgent need for economic development in agriculture; huge potential market; good natural condition for hybrid rice growth; strong support from Chinese and Indonesian governments, as well as companies from both sides.2. Current realities of hybrid rice development in Indonesia: Many hybrid rice varieties still at experimental/trial stages, only a few varieties approval and registration. Relative low import quantity of hybrid rice seeds; small planting area; hybrid rice sales network at its infancy; training of administrative and technical personnel a daunting task.3. Unfavorable conditions: High import and export barriers between China and Indonesia; hybrid rice variety and quality problem; lack of qualified technical personnel; inadequate funding from Chinese and Indonesian seeds companies; traditional planting methods and old technical know-how.4. Measures to take in implementing hybrid rice projects in Indonesia: focus on Indonesia hybrid rice market development; seek a strong Indonesia partner to cooperate with LPHT and set up a joint-venture; accelerate new rice variety breeding, application and registration process; realize gradually seeds production in local areas; provide strong technical support and customer service; encourage international exchange and cooperation; lobby for Chinese, Indonesian governments or other international organizations' help; overcome effectively import & export, customs and other regulation barriers.
