The poplar clearwing moth, Paranthrene tabaniformis (Rottemberg 1775), is one of the most dangerous pests of the poplars and widely distributed in Northern China. The larvae bore the young shoots and branches of the nurseries and young tree and cause serious malformation of the poplars. The damage leads to the poplars destroyed by wind. It brings about negative effects on forestry. This study indicated the law of seasonal flight through monitoring poplar clearwing moth with the synthetic sex pheromone in western forest area of Jilin Province. Furthermore, this study measured the main physiological and biochemical components indices of 6 poplar strains and analysed the relationship between main physiological and biochemical components indices and the infestation rate of poplar clearwing moth. The aim is to lay a theoretical foundation for the selective breeding of new poplar species and harmless control of poplar clearwing moth in the future. The main results are as follows:1. The law of seasonal flight of poplar clearwing moth in Jilin Province,Songyuan region,as follows: the emergence of adults was around mid-May, and the peak flight period came out at the end of June and lasted for 15 days or so. At the beginning of July, the number of male adults captured in field trails turned to lower level and declined successively. This result indicated that poplar clearwing moth entered into the end of the seasonal flight period.2. The law of daily flight of poplar clearwing moth below: poplar clearwing moth appeared after 12:00am, and the peak of active period was between 2:00pm and 4:00pm.This is coincident with the fact that the moth has a preference for sunshine. At this time the moth commonly flied on the verge of forest or some place lacking of vegetation. Traps did not capture any male adults after 8:00pm, so it showed that the moth did not move at night.3. In the period of larvae infestation at the end of June, the main nutrition ingredients in the phloem of 6 poplar strains were significantly different and only the total nitrogen contents in the xylem among different poplar strains showed significantly difference; The secondary metabolites in the phloem of 6 poplar strains were also significantly different and tannin and flavone contents in the xylem showed significantly difference. In the period of larvae infestation, soluble sugar and total nitrogen contents in the phloem of 6 poplar strains were remarkably lower than the contents in the period of larvae living through the winter. Reducing sugar contents in the phloem of 4 poplar strains were also remarkably lower than the contents in the period of larvae living through the winter. Soluble sugar and reducing sugar contents in the xylem of 6 poplar strains were remarkably lower than the contents in the period of larvae living through the winter; Tannin contents in the phloem of 5 poplar strains were significantly higher than the contents in the period of larvae living through the winter. Phenol contents in the phloem of 4 poplar strains were also significantly higher than the contents in the period of larvae living through the winter. The phenol contents in the xylem of 5 poplar strains were also significantly higher than the contents in the period of larvae living through the winter.4. In the period of larvae infestation, tannin contents in the phloem were significantly and negatively correlated to the damaged trees rate, and phenol and flavone contents in the phloem showed no significant correlation with the damaged trees rate. Tannin, phenol and flavone contents in the xylem showed no significant correlation with the damaged trees rate.Water, soluble sugar and reducing sugar contents in the phloem had no significant correlation with the damaged trees rate. There was slightly and positively correlated between total nitrogen contents in the phloem and the damaged trees rate. There was a slight and positive relationship between water content in the xylem and the damaged trees rate, soluble sugar, reducing sugar and total nitrogen contents in the xylem had a slight and negative relationship with the damaged trees rate.
