Planted forest plays an important role in ecology, economy and society,so it is necessary to do a research on sustainable management of planted forest in China. After reading many English and Chinese books on forestry,I have made a summary on the important forestry practices concerning sustainable development, and also summed up the world plantation status, problems and treatments. Then I have analysed the plantation status and problems in China, and presented my solutions to the problem of planted forest in China. In the past century , theories and practices on sustainable management are close-to-nature forest, continuous cover forest,multi-purpose,new forestry, long-term site productivity (LTSP), and ecosystem management etc, they have certainly become component parts in nowadays forestry sustainable development. There is 187 million ha planted forest in the world, pine and eucalyptus are the main species in plantation. Some foreign countries have gained 60%~93% industrial product from 1.2%~16% plantation area. But the uniformity of plantation crops bring possible biological risks,i.e. instability of tree, weakness in poor environmental condition, sensitive to disease, low economic and ecological benefit. To counter these problems, some countries have adopted intensive forest management,close-to-nature,continuous cover forest,multi-purpose,the development of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management and forest certification etc. Although the plantation area in China is the largest in the world, the quality of plantation is low,the problems are serious, such as biological instability (including pest disaster, weakness in abnormal climate and site decline),low biodiversity and poor productivity. With the reference of the other countries'treatment,I present my positive suggestions on sustainable management of planted forest in China as follows:1. Biodiversity development for a higher biological stability. It concerns with forest recovery by natural forces, development of the precious and native species, afforestation with multiple species, adjustment of species composition for an ideal landscape, and reasonable vegetation management.2. Management systems for sustainable productivityThere are two types of management systems on sustainable productivity, one is factors that can be controlled by management, such as debris treatment, vegetation development, mixture building, fertilization and land preparation; the other is the factors that cannot be controlled by management, i.e. climatic disaster and fire; I think we should do more research on the 1st type, and reduce the 2nd type to the minimum by forecast.3. Promotion of intensive forest managementThe key techniques in intensive forest management are genetical control, site control, spacing control, site productivity control and vegetation control. With these key techniques, some countries (including China) have reached the six goals of orientation, fast-growing, high productivity, best quality, stability and high economic benefit.
