As the main body to maintain urban ecosystem, suburb forests are of great value to the urban development. They are not only able to provide the value of trees, more importantly to purify the environment, to conserve soil, to conserve water resources and abate the city noises and other social services. Urban forest structure and function is damaged by human activity. As a result, dangers to the health of urban forest are overhanging. In order to enhance sustainable forest management and management level, the development of science and forest protection measures, it is really important to correct understanding of the urban forest functions and benefits of urban forest and evaluation of urban forest ecosystem health status. The suburb forests in the southern mountain region of Jinan as an important source of water conservation forest plays a conserve water and soil sources and improve water quality and other important protective role. Therefore, the forest ecosystem health assessment of Jinan City in the southern mountain ecosystems and the protection of the building is of great guiding significance to the Jinan City in the southern mountain ecosystems and the protection. The main contents followed:(1) Based on the theory of the urban forest and forest ecosystem health assessment, this paper has theoretically analyzed and discussed the ecosystem health's concept, connotation and research under progress. It includes the definition of the concept of the urban forest and forest ecosystem health assessment indicators and methods.(2) Under the guidance of the principles of science, maneuverability and sensitivity, based on fundamental of forest ecology and system science, a forest health assessment indicator system of suburb forests at stand level in the southern mountain region of Jinan and the assessment method were proposed with the complex structure and function indicator method. And a case study in the southern mountain region of Jinan was made. The study has divided the indexes which affect the forest health into four parts: foundational index, constitutive index, anti-jamming index and ecological benefit index.(3) This paper intends to study the suburb forest ecosystem health with quantification theoryâ… o n the basis of the altitude, the slope, the direction of slope, the thickness of soil and the humus and set up the site index of each forest differentiation model system. This paper mainly discusses the assessment of the forest ecosystem health in the southern mountain region of Jinan using the scientific data obtained by investigating in wild forestry and experimenting in the laboratory. At the same time, some important parameters and indices calculated with these scientific data by mathematical software can be put into efficient in assessing the construction and function of the southern Jinan forest ecosystem.(4) The weighted of indicators are determined taking the method of AHP. The forest health index (FHI) was calculated respectively by the use of indicator weight systems.(5) Through different site conditions on the ecosystem health status to compare reach a conclusion. The Result from analysis above shows that: The sub-healthy counts for the majority, 46.7%. The better healthy counts for the minority,0.01%.The healthy counts for 45.3%,the unhealthy counts for 7.99%.(6) Some suggestions for improving the forest health have been brought forward respectively according to the basis of the results of the forest health evaluation.
