Field experiment were carried out to investigate effects of nitrogen and sulfur fertilizer, and ridge on growth, quality and soil Nmin of Zhangqiu spring onion (ZQ) and Longyao fleshy root onion (LY). The different of cultivar characters, shoot and root growth, organosulfur compounds and soil Nmin between the two cultivars were enunciated, to offer a certain theory for production of Chinese spring onion. The major results were as follows.1. ZQ was showed significantly differences from LY at cultivar characters. Plant and pseudostem height of ZQ was larger than that of LY, however, LY had bigger pseudostem diameter than ZQ. From the two cultivars, better commodity quality could be found with ZQ of longer pseudostem and LY of fleshy root onion.2. Lower organosulfur compound concentration was determined in ZQ, while that were higher in LY. At the stage of quickly growth, large quantities of mineral nutrition was absorbed by Chinese spring onion to maintain a better growth step, however, the concentration of organo-sulfur compounds in ZQ and LY were increasing, and this indicated that the quickly growth stage were the optimal date to regulate the organosulfur compounds concentration. Genotype was the main factor to effect organo-sulfur compounds concentration of Chinese spring onion. N and S fertilizer application rate did not affect orgaon-sulfur compound concentration at a higher soil available S content.3. The yield of ZQ and LY were affected significantly by N application rate in this field experiment. ZQ and LY acquired the highest yield at N application rate of 300 kg/ha, however, the treatments of 0 and 600 kg/ha showed a lower yield. Therefore, optimal N application could obtain higher yield.4. N, S fertilizer and their interactions had no effect on 0 - 90 cm soil Nmin of ZQ and LY, and no differences could be found between the two cultivars. However, 300 kg/ha and 600 kg/ha N application rate increased 0 - 90 cm soil Nmin significantly.5. Ridge had significant effects on growth and yield of Chinese spring onion. Plant and pseudostem height, pseudostem diameter, dry matter accumulation and yield of ridge treatment were higher than no-ridge treatment. The effect extent degree of ZQ was litter than LY by ridge. Litter difference of root growth rate could be found from ZQ, however, significant differences could be investigate from LY. Root growth rate were also affected by N application. The treatment of 300 kg/ha N application rate of ZQ acquired the highest root growth rate, and the lowest were found in no N application treatment. However, LY showed the highest root growth from no N treatment, and 600 kg/ha N application rate acquired the lowest root growth. Therefore, N fertilizer rate showed more effect on root growth of LY than ZQ.
