Variation of wood properties and wood chemical composition, genetic control and genetic correlation between traits were studied systematically on 44 clones of Masson's pine(Pinus massoniana). 10 excellent clones for pulpwood were selected by factors analysis and cluster analysis. The main results were as follows:1.There were significant or badly significant differences among clones in wood properties and wood chemical composition, such as, basic density, tracheid length, tracheid width, the ratio of length to width and the contents of benzene, water, ash, pentosan, lignin and holocellulose.2. Broad-sense heritability in basic density, tracheid length, tracheid width and the ratio of length to width varied from 0.587 to 0.681, the contents of benzene, water, ash, pentosan, lignin, holocellulose varied from 0.555 to 0.817. The results showed that the traits were under middle to strong genetic control in most conditions.3. The negative relationship of wood basic density with tracheid width and tracheid length were not significant. The positive relationship of tracheid length with the contents of water, benzene, pentosan and lignin were significant. The positive relationship of tracheid width with the contents of ash, benzene, lignin and holocellulose was significant. The positive relationship of the content of ash with lignin was significant, with holocellulose and pentason were not significant.4.By way of factors analysis and on the basis of results from cluster analysis, 10 better pulpwood clones were selected.
