The color of the heartwood, especially, the bright and red-brownish-colored of Chinese fir heartwood has both the commercial benefits and esthetics value for solid wood utilization. However, there were fewer reports published on this topic. In this thesis, we reported results from the examination on a 10 years old plantation and two 5years old open-pollinated family genetic tests from the Chinese fir seed orchard with Red Color Heartwood parents, to understand the general information about the variation of heartwood color and genetic variation among the 40 families. The research materials planted on the Yangkou State Forest Farm, and Guanzhuang Forest Farm, Fujian Province, respectively. The main results were as follows:1. Variation on the trait of red-colored heartwood in a ten years plantation planted with materials selected as high ratio red-colored heartwood. The average percentage of red-colored heartwood of plantation with selected materials was 30.07%, the C.V. was 34.55%; But on unselected local Chinese fir (CK) was 26.73% for red-colored heartwood and the C.V. was 41.02%. There was very significant positive phonotypical correlation between the ratio of red-colored heartwood, and with the height, with DBH, respectively. There was no significant correlation between the microfibril and the height, DBH, Volume and either with the wood basic density.2. Genetic variation on growth traits. There were significant difference on the height and DBH among families, on the two sites and the 4 years repeated observations. There were significant difference not only existed on the height and diameter at 50cm above the ground, but also on the ratio of the red-colored heartwood among families at Yangkou testing.3. Correlation between traits of growth and the red-colored hear-wood ratio. The remarkable positive correlation were existed between the red-colored hear-wood ratio and the growth traits at all the four years, the correlation between the red colored heartwood ratio and height is 0.08505, and 0.07735 between red colored heartwood ratio and diameter at 50cm above the ground.4. Based on the progeny testing, there were eight families with the characters of fast growing, and eight families with higher ratio of red-colored heartwood, in addition eight families with both fast growing and higher ratio on red-colored heartwood to have been selected. There were 18 individuals with features of fast growing and higher ratio on red-colored heartwood to be primary chosen ascandidates of clonal propagation.
