In recent 20 years, with the increasing population and excessive use of resource, coastal protection forest system was damaged heavily, and there are still some problems existed in coastal protection forest in Shandong which affected the function of protection forest, and this problem also caused a series of ecological problems. In order to get the general information of community composition and diversity of coastal protection forest and improve the construction of coastal protection forest in Shandong, four test sites classified into three community types i.e. belt of coastal shrubs and herbs, protection forest of Pinus thunbergii , and mixed forest. were selected from the north to the south in Shandong i.e. Penglai, Longkou, Haiyang and Rizhao to investigate the comosition and structure of plant species as well as the physical and chemical properties of soil, and the environmental factors, plant community structures and current growth status were analyzed, and the relation of community composition, diversity and soil property were also discussed. And the results showed:1. The investigation of community showe that composition and structure of community were changing to some degree. The variety of protection forest is more than that of coastal shrub and grass zone and mixed forest, the variety of plants increased by 34.48% and 18.18%, respectively; the farther to the sea, the lower the proportion of shrub layer and the variety of liana, while the changing of herb is not obvious.the dominant species of coastal shrub and grass zone is Vitex trifolia Linn.var.simplicifolia Cham, Dichondra repens and Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop, the importantance value of the dominant species in shelter belt and mixed forest decreased obviously; the dominant species of shelter belt is Artemisia princeps, Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb, Zoysia japomca and C.Chinensis (Maxim.) Keng, the importance value of these plants decreased differently; the dominant species of mixed forest is Imperata cylindrica (Linn.) Beauv, Commelina communis L, Conyza japonica (Thunb.) Less, and Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv.2. Community diversity was different in divers areas, but that of the mixed forest is the highest. The diversity index of coastal shrub and grass zone in Penglai and Haiyang is the lowest; the diversity index of shelter belt in Longkou and Rizhao is the lowest. The evenness in different areas is almost the same. The evenness index of coastal shrub and grass zone in Longkou, Haiyang and Yantai is the lowest, and the changing trendency is: mixed forest > shelter belt > coastal shrub and grass zone, while the evenness index of shelter belt in Rizhao is the lowest.3. The changing tendency of soil physical property is almost the same, that's the father to the sea, the lower the soil porosity; the higher soil water content, capillary porosity, soil salt content, soil available nitrogen, available phosphorus and organic matter. While the changing of available P, Cu, Zn and Fe were different in divers community type.4. Special connection existed among different factors of the soil, such as soil water content, soil capillary and soil available nitrogen. The index that affected the richness is successively: the contention of organic matter, Cu and soil porosity; the index that affected community devisity and evenness are soil porosity and soil bulk density.
