Zoysiagrass utilized extensively as a good warm-season turfgrass in the warm and climatic transitional regions of China. But its disadvantages limited its further application, the main limited factors is short green period in north region. To breed new Zoysiagrass cultivars with longer green period and good cold tolerance is our aim. Observing the dynamics of autumn and spring color changes in experimental materials at Beijing and Jiaozhou in 2007 autumn and 2008 spring. In 2007autumn and 2008 spring the dynamics of autumn spring color changes in experimental materials was observed by digital image analysis,and analyze the physiological indices of cold tolerance. The results showed that:1 The digital image analysis applied to the dynamics of autumn and spring color changes in Zoysiagrass for the first time in China. The visual observation evaluating turf characteristics changed into digital quantitative analysis it. Digital quantitative analysis can improve the accuracy of determination result, can obtained a lot of images one time, and can realize the automatic batch analysis to improve the efficiency. When the dynamics of autumn and spring color changes in Zoysiagrass analyzed by Sigmascan Pro 5.0 image analysis software, the setting for selecting the green pixels were hue (H) 32-107, saturation level (S) 10-100 and for yellow pixels were hue (H) 10-32, saturation level (S) 25-100.2. Observing the autumn and spring color changes in Zoysiagrass at Beijing and Jiaozhou in 2007 autumn and 2008 spring, we found that the green period of Z. japonica var. pollida Nakai ex Honda cv. Jiaodong and Z. japonica cv. Qingdao is 184d and 189d respectively at Beijing. The green period of experimental materials at Jiaozhou is extensively longer than the green period of experimental materials at Beijing.3. Observing dynamics of the autumn and spring color changes in Zoysiagrass, we found that the ranking order of the four experimental materials for green period length (from long to short) was Z. japonica var. pollida Nakai ex Honda cv. Jiaodong,Z. japonica cv. Liaodong, H2 strain, Z. japonica cv. Qingdao. 4. Observing dynamics of the autumn and spring color changes in Zoysiagrass, we found that the ranking order of the four experimental materials for green period length (from long to short) was Z. japonica cv. Japanese, Z. Japonica cv. Jiangsu, Z. japonica var. pollida Nakai ex Honda cv. Jiaodong, Z. Japonica cv. Qingdao,Z. Japonica cv. Liaodong, H2 strain, Z. japonica cv. Lanyin No.Ⅲcan't overwinter. Until the late April, the regeneration rate of Z. japonica cv. Lanyin No.Ⅲwas about 40%, this shows that the winter survival rate of Z. japonica cv. Lanyin No.Ⅲis low, it is inaptitude to plant in Beijing.5. Measuring the freezing lethality rate, the relative electrolyte leakage, the free proline content and the water water soluble sugar content after low temperature treatment for seven experimental materials, and then analyzed by the method of subordination function. The ranking order of seven experimental materials'cold tolerance was Z. Japonica cv. Liaodong, Z. japonica var. pollida Nakai ex Honda cv. Jiaodong, Z. Japonica cv. Qingdao, H2 strain, Z. japonica cv. Japanese, Z. Japonica cv. Jiangsu, Z. japonica cv. Lanyin No.Ⅲ. The LT50 of the seven experimental materials is -9.6℃-12.1℃.
