In this study, 480 Hemibarbus maculatus, collected from Fengxi River Basin in Guangfeng County, Jiangxi Province, and the Hemibarbus maculatus fry feeding on natural feed were chose to determine the feeding habit of this species from the food composition, feeding intensity and morphology of feeding. The results showed that:1.The fingerling Hemibarbus maculatus feeded on the rotifer, cladocera and copepods and other small zooplankton.2.When Hemibarbus maculatus matured, 16 kinds of foods including the chironomid larvae, water earthworms, aquatic insects, corbicula, snail, small fish, small shrimp and so on were feeded by this species, moreover, the chironomid larvae were the most common food. The Hemibarbus maculatus, mainly feeding on the freshwater invertebrates, was the moderate omnivorous fish, lived in the bottom of water.3.The Hemibarbus maculatus from Fengxi River Basin in Guangfeng County feeded in the whole year. The feeding intensity of this species during the spring, summer and autumn were high, comparing to the winter. There was no significant changes in feeding intensity among seasons. The feeding was most vigorous in the spring and summer when the temperature was high, middle in the autumn, and weakest in the winter. The fact might be explained that the feeding was affected by temperature obviously. With the individuals' growth, the level of obturation index gradually decreased, but the feeding rate gradually became high. The levels of obturation index and feeding rate of individuals with V phase gonad were lowest.4. The aquatic insects and algae were the main components in the food intake of Hemibarbus maculatus, 75.24 % and 56.92 % respectively. The follows were oligochaetes, aquatic plants, mussels and protozoa, and the occurrence rate of them was 28% -40%. The occurrence rate of rotifers, cladocera, copepods, shrimp, snails, and so on were low and less than 15%. There was a certain different in the occurrence rate of same kind of food among seasons.
