We investigated the first and second rank key protected wild lives on the "List of National Key Protected Wildlife" (1988). The distribution areas vacancy of the national key protected wild lives and the national nature reserves were studied. Firstly, 110 families, 254 genus and 441 species of the national key protected wildlife on the "List" are seriously corrected and verified one by one. A data pool of the distribution of key protected wildlife among the nature reserves was set up based on the work of particular collection of the basic information of the key protected wild lives on the "List" and the analysis of the "Category of the Nature Reserves in China" (2007) by referring to all the science survey publications of the nature reserves and other scientific publications. We mainly studied the conservation status of first class national protect wildlife based on the data pool by using data analytical method. A result of the protection vacancy of the first class national key protected wild lives in different zoogeographical regions and national nature reserves is presented in this study. Based on this result, we can ascertain which kinds of species should be under the priority protected in China. We also pointed out that the zoogeographical regions that need to develop or enlarge the numbers and areas of the national nature reserves. The results obtained from this study are as follows:(1) At present, there are 332 national key protected terrestrial vertebrates get protection from the nature reserves in China. 77 national key protected wild lives, such as Nycticebus coucang, have been protected by the national nature reserves. And 20 national key protected wild lives are still missing protection form the national nature reserves.(2) There are 69 national key protected wild lives, such as Nycticebus coucang, have vacancy conservation areas in their zoogeographical regions and districts distribution. 15 species, such as Presbytis pileatus, have not protected in their zoogeographical regions. The geographic conservation rate of 18 species, such as Rhinopithecus roxellanae, is below 50%; The geographic conservation rate of 36 species, such as Rhinopithecus roxellanae, is above 50%. 28 species, such as Nycticebus intermedius, have no vacancy protection areas.(3) The conservation rate of the first class protected terrestrial vertebrates distributed in Zhungaer Boundary Mountain Province is 100%. And the conservation rate of 28 zoogeographical regions, such as the Northern Part Daxing'anling Province, is above 50%. 16 zoogeographical regions, such as Liao River Plain Province, have protected less more than 50% first class protected terrestrial vertebrates. The rest 9 zoogeographical regions, including South Jin-Huai River- Funiu Province etc. have not protected the first class protected terrestrial vertebrates inside these zoogeographical regions. (4) Among all kinds of ecology type and different levels, an unbalance distribution phenomenon exists in the nature reserves. Besides, the distribution of the nature reserves has a significant character of regional distribution differences in China.(5) There are 305 national natural reserves distributing in 46 zoogeographical regions in China until 2007 among all the 54 zoogeographical regions.(6) Display generally, the numbers of the national reserves is not in proportion to the conservation rate of the national key protected wild lives in every zoogeographical region.Combining with practice situations, several countermeasures on the priority protection of the national key protected wild lives and the national nature reserves are suggested according to the modern problems.
