To assess the spectral reflectance responses of dominant trees to sunlight radiation, altitudinal gradients and competitive intensity in Changbai Mountain, and to provide useful data for the research of succession there, using a spectral analysis system, we measured the correlation between leaf spectral reflectance and pigment concentration of chosen species, the spectra reflectance of six tree species in the gap and understory of broad-leaved Korean pine forest, the spectral reflectance of Pinus koraiensis, Abies nephrolepis and Betula ermanii along altitudinal gradient. The effect of above-and belowground competition on Fraxinus mandschurica leaf spectral reflectance was also studied. We found that the spectral indices have strong correlations with leaf pigments concentration whereas there are great differences of leaf reflectance among all the trees. The values of Ch1 NDI in gap were higher than understory while the values of PRI were lower in gap. There is more solar radiation in the gap, the stress of trees may not decrease, so photosynthetic rate doesn't increase. There were positive correlations between the indices of the two tree species, Pinus koraiensis and Betula ermanii, and the altitudinal gradient. But there were not such correlations between the indices of Abies nephrolepis and the altitudinal gradient. We also found that the differences of growth rate, biomass and root morphological traits between four treatments had a great coincid ence with the difference of spectral indices and spectral reflectance curve. This meant that leaf spectral reflectance was a reliable way to detect different responses of F. mandshurica towards different competition intensity...
