Northern of Yinchuan plain, located in downstream of the yellow river irrigation area, was lack of water recourses relatively, wherease had the higher underground water level, little precipitation and intensive evaporation, which influenced the soil structure, leading to form a large saline-alkali land. So it is an important to modify saline-alkali soil for ecological environment and food security improvement. In this study, pot and field experiments were used to study the effect of different soil modifiers on the saline-alkal soil in Ningxia. The pot experiment including four treatments (sulfur (including five levels), gypsum, organic matter and PAM) was to do research on the soil water perprosity and the field experiment which tested the soil pH, soil bulk density, total porosity, dispersion coefficient, field moisture capacity, saturated water content, wilting coefficient was uesd to discuss the changes of soil physical and chemical properties. The main results were as follows:(1) The pot experimentThe soil structure was changed to some extent after using different soil modifiers, and PAM treatmen presented the best modify effect. Compared with other treatments, the soil bulk density was effectively decreased and the total porosity increased in the PAM treatment. There was certain relationship between the amount of sulfur used and soil bulk density, wherease the correlation with soil total porosity and dispersion coefficient was not existed. After using the four soil amendments, the field moisture capacity, saturated water content and capillary moisture content increased, but wilting coefficient decreased, at the same time, the effect of the PAM was significant. However, the S4(900kg/hm2) presented the advantagable result among the different amount of sulfur treatments. The soil water characteristic curve showed that the soil water conservation in the middle sulfur(S2) treatment was higher than other treatments.(2)Field experimentThe soil EC and pH decreased in the sulfur amendment. In this experiment, the sulfur treatment showed the better reduction in the soil pH than the gypsum, and the decrement of pH was positivly related to the amount of sulfur. The sulfur treatments made differences of salt ions then resulted in the soil totol salt changes which influenced the soil EC. there was no different change of Cl- content in all treatments. The elemental sulfur oxidation leaded to the increment of the soil SO42-,CO32- content and HCO3- were also enhanced but had no rules. The content of Ca2+, Mg2+ were different because of the different treatments. The content of Ca2+, Mg2+ were higher in the sulfur treatment than that in the CK treatment. The increment of Ca2+ was much more in the gypsum because it had more Ca2+ per se , and the content of Na+ increased as the sulfur increased. The soil different irons increased or decreased causing soil total salt changes, which absenced obviously relationship. The soil ESP and exchangable Na2+ content declined in the sulfur treatment, and the soil ESP decreased along with the addition amount of sulfur. Simultaneously, the effect in the sulfur treatment was superior to that in the gypsum treatment.Analyzing the soil available nutrients, the N, P,K and organic matter were also enhanced. In the oiliness experiment, the nitrogen significantly increased in the S2 treatment, wherease, the available P was higher in the S3 treatment. In the maize experiment, there was no distinct effect among the differert amendments. However, the available K was elevated to a certain extent, and the organic matter increased as the sulfur addition increased, which represented positive relationship. The yield of the oiliness and maize were significantly enhanced in the sulfur and gypsum treatment. And the yield increment in the higher sulfur addition (S3) was better than that in the gypsum treatment. In a word, all four kinds of modifier had some improvements in the soil moisture, especially using the sulfur promoted the saline-alkali soil soil quality to a healthy orientation in Ningxia.
