It's important to study the mechanisms of the rice floral development, because the rice floral organs provides the basis of the rice grain formation. We found a rice floral organ mutant from tissue culture mutation generations, called Lemma elongated and Palea degenerated, lepd(t). Lepd(t) spikelets contained elongated lemma while most of lepd(t) spikelets'palea are degenerated to two leaf like structures. In addition, lepd(t) displayed nomal inner floral organs and fertile spikelets as the wildtype rice. In the present study, the genetic analysis indicated the mutantion trait is controlled by one recessive gene, termed lepd(t). We carried out fine mapping of the gene responsible for the mutated trait. The result showed that the mutated trait was located on the long arm of chromosome 3 between the marker indel0319 and CAPS0314, the physical region is 5.5k, and finally cosegregated with the marker CAPS0319. After sequecing of the putative region, we speculated that lepd(t) is a novel homeotic mutantion of OsMADS1 in rice.
