The muli-panicle varieties, Yumai 49-198, was employed to measure the effects of different growth stages (jointing before and after jointing) with different soil moisture on the wheat population quality, roots, carbon metabolism, photosynthetic characteristics and yield under field conditions. The main finding is as follows:1 Effects of different water treatments on population quality of wheatThe tiller dynamics of wheat showed unimodal curve with the growth process progress, the tiller peak appeared on turning green stage, it is up to 1722.5×10~4/hm~2.The tiller dynamics of high water district before jointing was the highest, followed low water district, and CK was the lowest and at turning green stage, the difference was significant. However, high soil moisture after jointing promoted into a significant increase in spike, the fourth treatment to the highest, it is up to 770××10~4/hm~2 at mature. LAI at turning green showed the high water district before jointing was the highest, followed low water district, and CK was the lowest, with the increase in soil moisture after jointing, effective leaves area increased and the photosynthetic function of leaves extended. Different soil water content after the jointing showed a great impact than before jointing at the latter part of LAI.2 Effects of different water treatments on roots of wheatSecondary roots showed unimodal curve with the growth process progress, early growth was smaller, increased rapidly after jointing, booting stage was up to maximize and then senescence. Root dry weight were maximum at booting, after the fall, the total root biomass in 0 ~ 80cm soil layer at booting increase 34.7%,34.4%,75.5%,91.8%,92.5%,98.0% compared with CK respectively. The total root biomass in 0 ~ 80cm soil layer at Turning green showed low water district before jointing was the highest, followed high water district and CK was the lowest, increase 79.3% and 62.7% compared with CK respectively. Root biomass of booting was significantly lower than anthesis, that show decline of the decomposition process earlier before mature. With increased with the increase of soil water content,in 40 ~ 80cm soil layer of root dry weight showed T3 T5, T6> T7, T3> T2> CK. leaves soluble sugar content at mature showed increased with irrigation amount, plant residues were more soluble sugar. No irrigation depressed sucrose content of flag leaves, excessive irrigation led to increase flag leaves sucrose synthesis inhibition, significantly lower content of flag leaves, not conducive to transfer sucrose in flag leaves to grains. Soluble sugar and sucrose content of grains 15d after anthesis decreased rapidly, after gradually.Grain starch content was no significant difference between treatment 2 and treatment 3, however, differences between CK was significant. Mature amylose/amylopectin value showed CK < T2
