Objective:Dendritic Cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells (APCs), and induce antigen-specific immune responces. Infiltration of tumors by DCs is thought to reflect the interaction between the host immune system amd tumor cells. To investigate the infiltration of DCs in the tissues of lung cancers and analyze its correlation with the histological types, histological differentiation, local lymph-nodes involvement and the tumors' size of the tissues of lung cancers, we practiced this study. Furthermore, we wanted to investigate its relationship with the prognosis of the patients of lung cancers.Materials and Methods:We randomly selected 89 patients (ranging in age from 32 to 75 years) with primary lung cancer from the files of the pathological department of No.l Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Zhejiang University who underwent tumorectomy between 19% and 1997, including 33 squmaous cell carcinomas, 30 adenocarcinomas, 18 bronchial-alveolar carcinomas and 8 small cell un-differentiated carcinomas. Nocase had undergone any previous chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other therapy before(3) In the group of lung cancer that its maximum diameter was >3cm, the ratio of marked-infiltrating of DCs was 44.90%, significantly lower than 75.00% in the group of lung cancer that its maximum diameter was <3cm (P<0.01).(4) There were statistically more infiltrated DCs in the tissues of middle-differentiated adenicarcinomas and sgumaous cell carcinomas of lung than that in the low-differentiated group (PO.01)(5 ) Among the patients of stage I, the post-operative survival time in the group of marked-infiltrating of DCs was longer than that in die group of none to slight-infiltrating of DCs. The difference was also statistically significant (PO.05).Conclusion:This study demonstrated the S-100+ DCs were presented in various amounts in the tissues of primary lung cancers. The density of infiltrated DCs could serve as an indicator of defence of the host against the carcinoma. The marked-infiltrating of S-100 positive DCs was usually assiciated with a better prognosis.(3) In the group of lung cancer that its maximum diameter was >3cm, the ratio of marked-infiltrating of DCs was 44.90%, significantly lower than 75.00% in the group of lung cancer that its maximum diameter was <3cm (P<0.01).(4) There were statistically more infiltrated DCs in the tissues of middle-differentiated adenicarcinomas and sgumaous cell carcinomas of lung than that in the low-differentiated group (PO.01)(5 ) Among the patients of stage I, the post-operative survival time in the group of marked-infiltrating of DCs was longer than that in die group of none to slight-infiltrating of DCs.
