Objective: To investigate the effect of different therapeutic modality and potential prognostic factors in patients with brain metastases. Materials and methods: From January 1999 through January 2001, 87 patients with CT-diagnosed (or MRI-diagnosed) brain metastases were referred to Tianjin Cancer Hospital .We took a retrospective study .The majority of patients were treated with combination treatment ,The remainder were treated with chemotherapy, whole-brain radiotherapy, stereotactic radio-therapy (SRS),surgery .The information on potential prognostic factors (age, sex, performance status, number of brain metastases, site of primary tumor ,histology, serum lactate dehydrogenase, treatment modality, present external cranial) was collected .Results: Overall median survival was 5.63 months, with 3-month,6- month,9-month,l-year survival percentages of 47.13%, 31.03%, 20.69%, 10.34% respectively. Survival was statistically significantly different between SRS+C group and simple treatment group ( R, C, N) with median survival of 13.5 months in patients treated with SRS+C group. (PO.05). S+R+C group and simple treatment group, with media survival of 11 months in patients treated with S+R+C group (P<0.05). SRS +R +C group and chemotherapy, non-treatment group , with media survival of 12 months in patients treated with SRS +R +C group (PO.01).Conclusion: The optimal treatment is combination treatment ^specially SRS+C group ,S+R+C group, SRS +R +C group. Survival is longer in these groups with media survival of 12 months or so . Performance score, primary tumor status, present distant metastases or not, serum LDH level treatment modality wereindependent prognostic factors .prognosis was not related with age ,sex, number of brain metastases histology.
