Objective: To study the characteristic of clinical manifestation and cell immunophenotype in cases with primary extra-nodular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (PE-NHL) in otolaryngol head and neck. Methodes: One hundred and fifty five patients of primary extra -nodular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (PE-NHL) in otolaryngol head and neck from 1991 to 2000 were studied retrospectively. Result : Twenty six to fifty years old was most common (46%,71/155) ages range in the group of patients with PE-NHL.Waldeyer's ring was the most commonly involved site (59.4%, 92/155 ) , next the PE-NHL respectively occurred in sinonasal (36.8%,57/155). Only in a fewcases the PE-NHL occurred in laryngopharynx and larynx. The patients mainly showed the symptoms of primary lesion located, and there was no characteristic symptom. The lump or necrosis signs were mostly observed on primary position .Cell immunophenotype result displayed 46.4% of the PE-NHL originating from T cells, while 53.6% originating from B cell .Most of waldeyer's PE-NHL originating from B cell, while most of sinonasal PE-NHL originating from T cell. Conclusion: The clinical manifestation in the patients with the PE-NHL lacked characterisic symptoms. These PE-NHL were easily made a misdiagnosis.Promoted doctor's knowledge of this disease , repeated exact biopsy and immunohistochemical approaches were necessary.
