Objective To investigate the efficacy and security of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) in combination with ADM in the treatment of implanted portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) of rabbit. Methods Fourty-five rabbits with implanted portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) were randomly divided into four groups five days after implantation; group A(n=15) received HIU sonication; group B(n=10) received ADM; group C received HIU and ADM; group D(n=10) did not received therapy. In the group A, 5 of 15 were randomly selected to mesure portal wein pressure(PVP), then were sacrificed to assess pathological changes of targeted tissue on the 6th day after ultrasound radiation. The survival time of each rabbit was recorded. Results After treatment with HIU, PVP was not significantly decreased. Targeted tissue showed an coagulative necrosis following treatment. Hemorrhage or vessel rupture of portal vein inside the targeted tissue was not caused by treatment. Compared with group B and group D, the survival time in the group A and group C was significantly longer (P<0.05). However, there were were no significant differences in surrival time between group B and group D. Conclusion HIU in combination with ADM can safely and effectively treat implanted PVTT of rabbit...
