Objective: To investigate the cytotoxic effect of Fraction C from Naja Naja Actra Venom (FC) on Human Glioma cell line (U251) and its possible mechanisms and to compare its effect with those of Chemotherapeutical drugs. Methods: MTT was involved in detecting the cytotoxic effects, dose-effect related rates of FC on Human Glioma cell line (U251),Human Glial cell and. These effects were compared with those of Nimustine hydrochloride(ACNU) and Adriamycin(ADM) on the above mentioned cells.Result: The inhibitive effect of FC on U251 was obvious, with the IC50 of 2.95 and 2.2lug/ml at 24 and 48h respectively, compared to the IC50 of 8.60ug/ml and 6.61ug/ml respectively for Glial cell. The difference was significant (P<0.05).Conclusion: FC can effectively inhibit the growth and induce the apoptosis of the Human Glioma cell line (U251). It suggests that FC is more effective and selective in inhibiting the growth of glioma cells than the Chemotherapeutical drugs.
