ObjectiveTo study the relationship between the changes of transforming growth fac-tor-alpha(TGF-a) and liver function damage in different phases of hepatitis and the clinical relevance of TGF-aby measuring the level of TGF-otin patients with different type and phase liver diseases. Methods The method of RIA and auto-biochemistry instrument were employed to detect the serum TGF-a level and liver function index in 124 patients. Datas were analyzed by SPSS11. 5 soft ware using the methods of one-way ANOVA and linear regression. Results (1)All the patients were divided into 8 groups according to different phase and severity of liver diseases, acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis (mild), chronic hepatitisCmod-erate), chronic hepatitis (severe), compensation phase of liver cirrhosis, decompensation phase of liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and one control group. The levels of serum TGF-a were (13. 744 ± 4. 449)pg/ml, (8. 517 ± 2.. 719)pg/ml, (12. 815±2. 225)pg/ ml, (15. 892 ± 5. 049) pg/ml, (10. 563 ± 2. 953) pg/ml, (19. 405 ± 5. 932) pg/ml, (23. 376 ± 6. 460)pg/ml, (8. 396 ± 3. 107)pg/ml respectively. Except for that of chronic hepatitis (mild), the level of serum TGF-a in other groups were much higher than that of control group (P<0. 01) (2)Serum TGF-awas positively correlated with serum level of ALT, AST, ALB(P<0..05) and had no relationship with the level of AKP, r-GT, and TB (P<0. 05).Conclusion The level of serum TGF-a may associate with the prognosis of hepatitis B. The increasing level of TGF-a, reflecting the damage of liver function, may provide useful information for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis in hepatitis B.
