Object To study clinical and functional outcomes resulting from the surgical treatment for the tumors of the proximal part of the femur.Method Twenty-seven patients treated surgically for benign and malignant bone tumors of the proximal part of the femur during 1985-2002 in the Department of Orthopedics in Fujian Provincial Hospital. There were 18 men and 9 women, aged 14-62 years, average of 35 years. Pathological diagnosis of the tumors included 14 benign tumors, 9 malignant tumors and 4 metastatic tumors. All of the patients were proceeded with limb salvage surgery except 1 case received amputation in the malignant tumor team. After tumor curettage or excision , 11 cases were reconstructed by interalfixation , 10 of them by endoprosthesis, 2 cases using hip-rotationplasty. A retrospective review were gathered to evaluate the effects of surgical treatment concerning the quality of life and limb function .Result The patients were followed from 6 mouths to 17 years after surgery. 3 of the patients with benign tumor had the local recurrence and 1 case was diagnosed to fibrous sarcoma in the later surgery. The patients' survival period of the malignant team ranged from 5 months to 6 years. 1 and 3 years survival rate were 76.9% and 59.8%. All patients achieved satisfactory walking function after surgery. Conclusions Early diagnosis and prompt limb salvage surgery were the critical points for achieving better limb function, long termsurvivals rate and quality life to patients with the tumor in the proximal part of the femur.
