Obstract: This study was designed to build a new experimental model of proliferation of arterial smooth muscle cells (SMC). Methods: The central artery of the rabbit ear was heated by 43±0.5℃ for 3 hours a day ,and for three days .We examined the morphological changes of the arterials by light microscopy and digital planimetry, 3 days, 1 week ,2 weeks, and 4 weeks after experiment. Hirudo was administered 3 days before heating, and rabbits were examined 4 weeks after experiment. Results :As the increasing of the time ,the proliferation of SMC increased and extended to the lumine of the artery ,but the internal elastic membrane was not disrupted. So, the lumina stenosis occuerd . Hirudo caused the proliferation of SMC to decrease. Although the lumina become smaller , the effect is not significant. Conclusion: From the research results above, we can draw the conclusion that heat can induce arterial SMC to proliferate ,and then decrease the area of the artery lumina. The model is available. Heat can activate autocrine growth of the local SMC heated, and alter the structures and function of vasa vasorum originated from the host. Hirudo has a slight effect on decreacing SMC proliferaton, because it may not play a part in the relavent mechanism of heat.
