Objective To study the relationship of the serum IGF-1 > IGFBP-3 and gastrin in growth hormone deficiency(GHD)N non-GH deficient short stature and GHD after 3 months of r-hGH treatment. Methods Serum IGF-1, IGFBP-3 and gastrin level were measured in 20 GHD children before and after 3 months of rhGH therapy ,and compared to 20 non-GH deficient short stature and 20 normal children. The serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 level were measured by ELISA.The serum levels of gastrin was measured by specific radio- immunoassay(RIA). All calculation were performed with SPSS11.0.The paired-Samples T test was used to compare data before and after treatment. Correlation analysis were performed using pearson correlation coefficient. Statistical analysis for comparison of data between groups was performed by the Student-Newman-Keuls.Results The serum levels of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were significantly lower in GHD than those in non-GH deficient short stature and control group. The sensitivity of IGF-1 in GHD was 100%,the specificity was 75.5%,the accuracy of test was 80%. The sensitivity of IGFBP-3 in GHD was 80%,the specificity was 65.5%,the accuracy of test was 70%.The sensitivity of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 measured simultaneously in GHD were 80%, the specificity were 60%,the accuracy of test were 65.5%. The serum level of IGF-1. IGFBP-3 were significantly lower in non-GH deficient short stature than those in control group. The serum levels of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 increased significantly in GHD after 3 months of rhGH therapy, but were still lower than those in control group. The serum level of gastrin was lower in GHD than those in non-GH deficient short stature and control group. The level of serum gastrin increased significantly in GHD after 3 months of rhGH therapy, but was lower than control group. Conclusion 1) The serum level of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 are lower in GHD and in non-GH deficient short stature than normal, especially in GHD. Being detected togetherare more accurate than being detected respectively. 2) The serum levels of gastrin is lower in short stature than normal, and the serum level increase after rhGH therapy. GH may influence the secretion of gastrin.
