Objective Study on the association of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with the pathogenesis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy(ICP).Methods Twenty-five women with ICP and thirty normal pregnant women were studied. The levels of VEGF in maternal and umbilical venous serum were detected by enzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) ,and placenta from normal pregnancy and ICP women were detected by immunohistochemisty.Result (1) The mean birth weight of ICP's was (3230 434)g, Control's was 3462 599g, There was no significantly difference between two groups.(2) The average level of VEGF in ICP's maternal blood was130.22 76.51ng/L , in normal pregnant women was 235.60 86.04ng/L, VEGF in ICPs women was significantly lower than that in normal women,( P<0.01 =(3) The average level of VEGF in ICP's neonatal umbilical venous was 528.03 267.49 ng/L, in control's was 592.41 412.17ng/L, there were no significantly difference between two groups.(4) There were no difference in VEGF's localizaton between two gruops, in placenta VEGF was localized in syncytrophoblast, intermediate trophoblast and vascular endothelial.(5) The average grey of VEGF in placenta was determined by computer image analysis. The expression of VEGF in ICPs' placenta 136.2156 + 0.2137 was decreased significantly than that in normal pregnancies womem 136.3102+0.1946.(6) There have significantly relationship between total bile acid and VEGF. The higher level of TEA, the lower level of VEGF.Conclusion In our study there was no evidence to support that ICP's neonatal have intrauterine growth retardation ,probably it can be related to be early diagnosed and treated. The bile acid can impaire the vascular endothelial and the vascular endothelial growth factor was significantly lower in ICP' s. Probably the lower VEGF have influence in the pathogenesis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.
