Objective To explore the influencing factors for the antihypertensive efficacy of GITS (gastrointestinal therapeutic system) in patients with essential hypertension(EH). Methods A cohort study was performed in 822 patients with EH. The efficacy of GITS between male and female patients was compared. Linear regression analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to explore the effect of sex, age, BMI, base blood pressure and sitting-orthostatism blood pressure change on the antihypertensive efficacy of GITS .Results All patients' blood pressure reduced significantly after taking GITS and the curative effect was more obvious in female than that in male. Results of multiple linear regression analysis indicated that there were significant associations between base blood pressure, pulse pressure and the antihypertensive efficacy of GITS. A 1mmHg increment in base blood pressure increased the reduction of systolic pressure by 0.6mmHg(P<0.01) and 0.6mmHg(P<0.01) and that of diastolic pressure by 0.6mmHg(P<0.01) and 0.5mmHg(P<0.01) in male and female respectively. For every ImmHg increment in pulse pressure, the reduction of systolic pressure increased by 0.5mmHg(P<0.01) and 0.6mmHg(P<0.01) in male and female respectively and that of diastolic pressure decreased by 0.1mmHg in all patients(male: P<0..01, female: P<0.05). Age, BMI and sitting-orthostatism blood pressure change were not found to be associated with the efficacy of GITS significantly. But the reduction of blood pressure changed with the three factors. The older the male patients, the more the reduction in blood pressure appeared, but interestingly, the situation was reverse in female. All patients' blood pressure reduction decreased with BMI. There was an increase tendencyof efficacy of GITS with the increment of sitting-orthostatism blood pressure change. Conclusions GITS is an effective medicine for patients with EH. The curative effect is more significant in female and in those who have higher base blood pressure. There is no significant relationship between age, BMI, sitting-orthostatism blood pressure change and the effect of GITS. The higher the pulse pressure of the patients with EH, the more effective is the GITS on systolic pressure. But the result is reverse on diastolic pressure.
