Objective This was designed to determine whether the administration of a preoperative dose of celecoxib or rofecoxib to patients who have been operated whould decrease patient controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) agents (fentanyl and bupivacaine) and/or enhance analgsia. Methods 36 patients undergone continuous epidural anesthesia and caudal anesthesia were randomly divided into three throups, all patients received PCEA. Preoperatively, they were given oral celecoxib 200mg rofecoxib50mg and vitamin C 100mg. The outcome measures included pain scores and 24h fentanyl and bupivacaine use at 1h, 4h, 8h, 16h,20h and 24h postoperatively, etc. Meanwhile, the adverse events and the general analgsic assessment done by patients were recoded. Results Although the dose of fentanyl and bupivacaine use at 1 h was similar in three groups (P>0.05), the total dose at other point of time were significantly more in the placebo group than that in other two groups (P<0.05). There two patients (16.8%) who owned adverse events in the placebo group, but none in the other two groups. Pain scores were notsignificant difference (P>0.05). The general analgsic effects were consistent. Conclusion Ceiecoxib and rofecoxib both demonstrate an opioid-sparing effect after suprapubic transvesical prostatectomy. Meanwhile, they decrease adverse events. Therefore, ceiecoxib and rofecoxib are both suitable for balanced analgsia...
