Objective:To investigate the clinical effect of salmeterol/ fluticasone propionate combination (SFC) on treating moderate to severe pediatric asthmatic patients. Methods: Fifty-seven children asthmatic patients were randomly devided into a new combination therapy comprising salmeterol 50 μg and fluticasone propinate 100μ g(seretide) for these patients twice daily or BDP 250μ g twice daily for 12 weeks. Patients kept daily records of their morning and evening peak expiratory flow (PEF), daytime and night-time symptom scores. Results: Mean morning PEF increased by 67 L/min in the SFC group and by 50 L/m in the BDP group over 12 weeks. Significantly improvement in morning PEF was seen in both group. There was statistically significant difference between the two groups. SFC also control daytime symptom better than BDP. Conclusions: These results demonstrate that SFC is superior to BDP in the management of children with moderate to severe asthma on improving lung function and daytime symptom.
