Various complications cause the main damage of Diabetic Mellitus (DM). Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common syndromes of the Diabetic Mellitus. It is diagnosed by the physical symptom or electrophysiological tests. But the reported incidence of the disease has great difference. We discussed the pathogenesis of the DPN and described how to examine it. Based on the needs of clinic, we developed a new instrument to do research on the measurement of DPN via virtual instrument technology. Our work is consisted of two parts: (1) combining the virtual instrument technology and single chip microcomputer (SCM) to develop the non-invasive prototype instrument to perform the nerve conduct studies; (2) doing clinical tests to get the appropriate electrophysiological index for the early diagnosis of DPN by statistic. The prototype instrument is composed of two parts. The software designed by the virtual instrument workbench-LabVIEW. The hardware includes the SCM circuit, signal amplifying circuit, filters circuit, invariable electricity stimulator, RS232 serial port interface circuit and the power circuit. Using Lab VIEW, we construct a well man-machine conversation and analyze the data by signal processing method.20 volunteers are examined by the prototype instrument and the Synergy electromyograph (Dantec Ltd. Denmark). We proved the agreement of our prototype instrument and the Synergy electromyograph by statistic. In a word, the prototype instrument has good practicability.60 DM patients were examined by the prototype instrument to collect the electrophysiological data. We tested the agreement of clinical criteria and several electrophysiological parameters by the discriminant analysis . We conclude that the sural sensory conduction speed (SCV) and the minimal fibular F-wave latency have a high degree of sensitivity in the early diagnosis of DPN.The main innovation is as follows:(1) combining the virtual instrument technology and single chip microcomputer (SCM) to develop the medical instrument to perform the nerve conduct studies;(2) getting the appropriate electrophysiological index for the early diagnosis of DPN via discriminant analysis...
