Objective To investigate the response of the retina to an ischemic insult ,we measured the levels of glutamate in the vitreous of rabbit eyes. Methods Ischemic was induced by ligature of ciliary arteries for 45 minutes. Reperfusion was achieved by releasing the ligature. Rabbit eyes were enucleated at the end of ischemic period ,15,45,75 minutes after reperfusion. 6 rabbits were subjected to conjunctival peritomy to serve as sham-operated controls. 6 rabbits were served as normal controls.36 rabbits were divided to 6 groups in random. Results The level of glutamate in the rabbits vitreous which was measured by HPLC showed a significant increase at the end of the ischemic period (P<0.001) and 15 minutes (P<0.05),45 minutes (P<0.001) after reperfusion as compared with normal controls. Conclusions These results suggest that glutamate level in rabbits vitreous was increased transiently.
