Objective: To investigate the expression of survivin in normal human endometrium, and adenomyosis in order to study the function and relativity of apoptosis, cell proliferation and angiogenesis in the course of adenomyosis.Method: Specimens of normal endometrium, ectopic endometrial tissue and eutopic endometrial tissue in adenomyosis were obtained for immunohistochemical survivin, PCNA and endoglin analyses. Results: The expression of survivin in ectopic endometrial tissue of adenomyosis was significantly higher than that of normal endometrium and eutopic endometrial tissue in adenomyosis of proliferative phase (P<0.05). No significant difference between the endometrium of patients and of normal controls was observed (P>0.05). The mean microvessel density was significantly higher in adenomyosis than in the endometrium of proliferative phase and secretory phase of the same patients (P<0.05). No significant difference of microvessel density between the endometrium of patients and of normal controls was observed (P>0.05).Survivin expression was significantly associated with endoglin expression in endometrium of proliferative phase and secretory phase (r=0.612, P0.01). The abortion frequency of women with adenomyosis was significantly higher than normal controls. Survivin expression and microvessel density were significantly associated with abortion frequency (r=0.645, P<0.001).Conclusions: the overexpression of survivin and survivin-collected apoptosis and angiogenesis mechanism might play a pathogenic role in the development of adenomyosis .
