Objective To investigate the effect of thymosin αl on immunological function and protein metabolism in peritoneal sepsis rats. Methods We observed the effect of thymosin al on T cell subclassification, TNFa, IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, total protein, albumin, C-reactive protein(CRP) and mortality in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) induced septic rats. Results Concentration of TNFa, IL-2, and IL-6 in CLP induced septic rats increased significantly, and concentration of IL-10 decreased significantly, compared to control group. Thymosin αl significantly decreased TNFa, IL-6, and significantly raised concentration of plasma IL-2, IL-10, percent of CD3, CD4, and CD4/CD8 in septic group. Concentration of total protein and albumin degressed in both septic groups, but thymosin αl reduced degressive degree of total protein and albumin. Concentration of CRP increased in both septic groups, but was less prominently in thymosin al treated group. Thymosin al reduced total mortality of 7 days. Conclusion Thymosin al can modulate the release of cytokines metabolism and inflammation condition, and improve immunological function, and decrease in the rate of protein degradation, and reduce degressive degree of total protein and albumin, and attenuate CRP synthesis, and increase survival rate in sepsis rats.
