| 1. OBJECTIVE:Senile cataract is a vision-impairing disease characterized by gradual, progressive thickening of the lens. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world today. Phacoemulsification is the most efficient, safest way to treating cataract. The vision of the patiens will be improved after surgery. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Chinese herbal medicine for the quality of life in aged patients after phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation.2. METHODS:Sixty paitients with monofocal lens were randomly allocated to 2 treatment groups: placebo(n=30), Chinese herbal medicine treatment (n=30). Sixty paitients with multifocal lens were randomly allocated to 2 treatment groups: placebo(n=30), Chinese herbal medicine treatment (n=30). All patients received routine treatment after surgery, patients in Chinese herbal medicine treatment guoup received Chinese herbal medicine which can promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis, clear liver-fire and improve acuity of sight 1 time daily for 1 week, and then received Chinese herbal medicine which can supplement the liver and kidney, improve acuity of sight 1 time daily for three month. Distance vision, near vision, the quality of life(QOL) score and the quality of life score related with vision function were evaluated at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, half year after surgery. 3.RESULTS:(1)In the patients with monofocal lens implantation, The distance vision and near vision of the Chinese herbal medicine treatment group was significantly higher than placebo group (P<0.05).
