Objective To evaluate the effect of end-to-side neurorrhaphy andside-to-side neurorrhaphy in preventing the atrophy in denervated muscles. Methods 28 Sd rats were randomly divided into group A,B ,C andD,with 7 rats each. In group A,the distal end of transected peroneal nerve onthe right side was sutured to windowed tibial nerve in an end-to-side fashion .In group B,The distal end of transected peroneal nerve on the right side wassutured to windowed tibial nerve in an side-to-side fashion . In group C,thesevered ends of peroneal nerve were kept apart by suturing them intoneighbouring muscle. In group D,the nerve were left intact as control.Threemonths after operation, nerve conduction velocity and eletromyograph wereperformed, the anterior tibial muscle was taken for wet weight measurementand histologic examination. Results 1.the nerve conduction velocity taked with eletromyographexhibited no significant difference between A and B (P>0.05). Thedifference of muscle wet weight and fiber cross sectional area of muscles alsomade no significant difference (P > 0.05) between them.2. the nerveconduction velocity could not recorded in denervated C.Compared with A,Band D,the difference of muscle wet weight and fiber cross sectional area ofmuscles made significant difference(P<0.01)3.the parameters tested ofgroup D were superior to those of A,B and C,the difference made significantdifference(P<0.01). Conclusions Both end-to-side neurorrhaphy and side-to-sideneurorrhaphy were valuable methods of preventing atrophy of denervatedmuscles,no difference was found between them, but these two methods couldnot attain the function of replacing the original nerve.
