Objective To observe the change of plasma ADMA in cholesterol-fed rabbits, and evaluate the effect of Tongxinluo on serum total cholesterol and plasma ADMA level. Method Eighteen male rabbits were divided into three groups randomly: control group with normal diet; cholesterol-fed group with 1% cholesterol diet; Tongxinluo group with 1% cholesterol diet and Tongxinluo 0.5g/kg*d. Concentrations of serum cholesterol, triglyceride and plasma ADMA were measured after four weeks. Result After four weeks on 1% cholesterol-fed, the serum total cholesterol level and plasma ADMA level were increased VS control group. Supplementation with Tongxinluo decreased the concentration of serum cholesterol and plasma ADMA. Conclusion An increase in plasma concentration of ADMA may be secondary to the elevation of serum cholesterol. The effect of Tongxinluo on anti-atherosclerosis may be related to the decreased concentration of plasma ADMA.
