This thesis explores the development of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Doctor examination system and the education of Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors (TCMD) between 1949 and 2001, since the R.O.C. government moved to Taiwan. Under Taiwan's particular circumstances, for over more than 50 years, the TCMD examination system has repeatedly been reformed to adapt to the changing TCM education environment. The development and reform of the TCMD examination system and the education of TCMD are closely related and have mutually influenced each other. Each stage of development has differed from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Japan and Korea.This report's research is based on historical materials in order to present an objective account of the appearance of the TCMD examination system and TCMD education in the last half century of Taiwan's history.The entire report has been organized into five chapters. Chapter one narrates the training and examination of TCMD in Taiwan before and after 1949. In addition, it briefly summarizes the related research studies. Chapter two separates TCMD education into two categories—informal TCM education and formal TCM education. Informal education includes master-to-apprentice or father-to-son transmission of knowledge, TCM associations, and cram schools, etc. Formal TCM education includes TCM departments, Bachelors degree TCM Departments, Post-SLQE(Special License Qualifying Exam) training classes ,TCM Education Extension departments, the Institute of TCM, and so on. At the same time, this chapter also compares the TCMD training courses of three different training systems.Chapter three concerns the different kinds of TCMD examinations—the TCMD Certificate Exam, the TCMD License Exam, the TCMD Special License Qualifying Exam (SLQE) and the TCMD Unitary License Exam. Each stage in the development of the TCMD examination system has marked a gradual movement towards unification.
