Objective To evaluate the effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor— Captopril and Chinese medicine—honghua extractives (HE) on the serum levels of selective inflammatory cytokines(IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α) and nuclear factor-κB expression of heart in renohypertensive rats. Methods Using two-kidney-one-clip method, renal hypertensive rats (RHR) were obtained by liganting left kidney artery. 52 Wistar rats were randomized into four groups: sham-operation group (A), model control group(B), captopril group (C) and HE group(D).All rats were killed after being given the trial drugs 5 weeks, ELISA assays were used to detect the levels of IL-6 and IL-10, the levels of TNF-alpha were measured with radioimmunoassays, and the expression of NF- κB was measured by immunohistochemistry method. Results (1) compared with group B, the left ventricular hypertrophy was attenuated in group C, the ratio of left ventricle and body weight was 0. 00274±0. 00029(C) and 0.00310±0. 00012(B) respectively(p<0. 01), the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α decreased significantly(p<0. 01 and p<0. 05 respectively), immunohistochemistry staining showed the expression of NF-κB also decreased (p<0. 05), whereas the levels of IL-10 were not changed between the two groups(P>0. 05);(2) compared with group A, the ratio of left ventricle and body weight was 0.00274 ± 0.00029(0 and 0. 00262 ± 0. 00047 (A) respectively (p>0. 05), the levels of IL-6 increased significantly(p<0.01), and the levels of TNF-a unchanged(p>0. 05), immunohistochemistry staining showed the expression of NF-κB increased significantly (p<0. 01), whereas the levels of IL-10 were decreased significantly between the two groups(P<0. 05);(3) compared with group B, the left ventricular hypertrophy was attenuated...
