Objective: To investigate the effect of continuous blood purification (CBP) on leukocytes functions in patients with ARDS. Methods: Twenty-four patients with ARDS were randomly divided into CBP group (n=13) or control group (n=11). The peripheral blood leukocytes chemotactic, phagocytic and oxidative respiratory burst activities of both groups patients were determined with flow cytometry before therapy and at 2h, 6h, 12h, 24h, 48h and 72h following therapy. The leukocytes functions of 6 healthy volunteers were also detected as normal. The scores of APACHE III and LIS for each patient were recorded before therapy and at 24h, 48h, 72h following therapy. Result: The activities of leukocytes in patients with ARDS exhibited significantly higher than those obtained from healthy volunteers. Compared with control group, the leukocytes functions were markedly attenuated and the scores of APACHE HI and LIS decreased significantly in the CBP group. Conclusion: CBP could alleviate the leukocytes activities and thus may improve the outcome in patients with ARDS.
