Chloasma is an acquired pigmentation dermatosis. The character of this disease is excess symmetry pigmentation. It has a complex mechanism.West medicine hasn't studied it completely and obviously. More study has discoved that oxygen freedom radix (OFR) is related to its occurring recent years. There is no satisfying treatment in melasma now. Chinese medicine shows some superiority with its less side-effects and lasting curative effect. In this test, we adopted Modified Taohong Siwu Decoction(MTSD) and observed its curative effect and examined the change of serum superoxide dismutasein (SOD), melon-dialdehvde (MDA),and catalase(CAT) before and after treatment.Our purpose is to evaluate the curative effect of Modified Tao Hong Si Wu Decoction from clinical and serology standard, at the same time observe the affection of MTSD to the levels of serum SOD, MDA and CAT, further to research the mechanism of MTSD in treating chloasma, thereby , provide evidence to clinical treatment for chloasma.Materials and methods30 female patients with chloasma were collected from the dermatology department in People's Hospital of Henan province from 2004.1 to 2004. 12. Among which, 18 cases belonged to the type of produced specially, 12 cases belonged to the type of acquired. All patients were classic chloasma, excluded coronary heart disease, high level of bloodfat, liver disease, kidney disease. Any drugs affected anti-oxidation function had not been used in recent one month.20 female healthy blood donors,who were from blood supply center of RedCross in Henan province from 2004.11 to 2005.1, were taken as normal controls.And they all didn't suffer from chloasma, hereditary disease and immune disease. MTSD were taken orally by patient group,one dose a day,bid,8 weeks is a course of treatment,and the medicine were taken for two course of treatment continually.we recorded and graded the clincal data of all patients before and after treatment distinguishably. Restoring basically: the area of speckles disappeared more than 90% with naked eye, pigment disappeared basically, declined index was more than or equalled 0.8 after treatment with grading methods.Showing effect: the area of speckles disappeared more than 60% with naked eye, pigment became lighter apparently, declined index was more than or equalled 0.5 after treatment with grading methods. Improving: the area of speckles disappeared more than 30% with naked eye, pigment became lighter than before, declined index was more than or equalled 0.3 after treatment with grading methods. No avail: the area of speckles disappeared less than 30% with naked eye, the change of pigment was not obvious, declined index was less than 0.3 after treatment with grading methods. In the same time, collected vine blood 5ml from patients before and after treatment; separated serum;measured the levels of SOD with QiangAn method, MDA with TBA method, CAT with Visible Light method.According to reagent box of directions, concrete procedure were oprated.Results:1. After patient group took medicine for two course of treatment, the score with grading method declined apparently. Among them, 9 cases restored basically, 12 cases showed effect, 6 cases improved and 3 cases had no avail. The total effective rate was 90%. The effective rate of 18 cases of the type of produced specially was 88.9%,12 cases of the type of acquired was 91.6%. There was no statistics means between effective rate of the two types according to exact probabilities in 2X2 table. (p>0.05) .2. The levels of serum SOD from patients (unit:U/ml):The average value of patient group was 77.38+12.64. The average value of controled group was 103.24 + 9.68. There was statistics means between two groups (t=7.746 p <0.05). The average value of the type of produced specially was 78.01 +3.96. The average value of the type of acquired was 76.43 +10.87. There was no statistics means between two types (t=0.331 p >0.05) .The level ofSOD had negative relevance to the score with grading method (r=—0.689 p <0.05) .After Chinese medicine treatment, the average value of patient group was 102.71 ±9.03. There was statistics means compared to before treatment (t=16.78 p <0.05) .3. The levels of serum MDA from patients (unit:nmol/ml):The average value of patient group was 5.88 + 0.61. The average value of controled group was 3.90 + 0.45. There was statistics means between two groups (t=—12.376 p <0.05) . The average value of the type of produced specially was5.87 + 0.57. The average value of the type of acquired was 5.89 + 0.70 .There was no statistics means between two types (t=—0. 072 p >0.05) . The level of MDA had positive relevance to the score with grading method (r=0.400 p <0.05) .After Chinese medicine treatment, the average value of patient group was3.59 + 0.63. There was statistics means compared to before treatment (t= 17.166 p <0.05) .4. The levels of serum CAT from patients(unit:U/ml):The average value of patient group was 1.19 ±0.47. The average value of controled group was 2.23 + 0.47. There was statistics means between two groups (t=8.013 /?<0.05) . The average value of the type of produced specially was 1.17+0.47. The average value of the type of acquired was 1.23 ± 0.51. There was no statistics means between two types (t=—0.343 /?>0.05) .The level of CAT had no relevance to the score with grading method (r=0.131 p >0.05) .After Chinese medicine treatment, the average value of patient group wasl.89+0.57. There was statisticsmeans compared to before treatment (t=—6. 442 /><0.05) . Conclusion In this test, we adopted MTSD to cure 30 female patients of chloasma, observed clinicalcurative effect and examined the levels of serum SOD, MDA, CAT. Our findings showed that:1. MTSD can improv the clinical symtemps of chloasma.2. MTSD has obvious antioxidize function.3. MTSD is related to reducing serum MDA and increasing the activity of SOD and CAT in treating chloasma.4. The levels of serum SOD,MDA are related to clinical symtemps of chloasma closely. They can be as an objective index of checking patients' condition and judging curative effect.5. MTSD has wide prospect in curing chloasma. It deserves further to study anddevelop.
