[Objective]To evaluate temporary balloon occlusion of the abdominal aorta in sacral tumors surgical operation as a useful adjuvant technique.[Methods]Temporary balloon occlusion of abdominal aorta was used in 21 patients during the sacral tumors surgical operations (study group). Another 15 patients with sacral tumors who receive the preoperative arterial embolization theraphy were used as control group. The quantity of blood loss during the surgery, the whole surgery time, the complication, mean days in hospital, recovery days post-operation and recurrence rate were recorded. The results in two groups were compared with each other.[Results]The time of operations of study group was 146.19±83.81 minutes . The loss of blood was 816.67±378.26ml. One case have complication after operation. Mean days in hospital are 26.25 ±8.08d. Recovery days post-operation are 33.71 ±9.12d. Recurrence rate of six months is 4.8%. Recurrence rate of one year is 5%. Recurrence rate of two years is 14.3%.The time of operations of control group was 201.33±48.09min. The loss of blood was 1640±569.21ml. Six cases have complications after operation. Mean days in hospital are 36.93 ± 7.43d. Recovery days post-operation are 45.03 ± 10.67d. Recurrence rate of six months is 20%. Recurrence rate of one year is 40%. Recurrence rate of two years is 46.7%.[Conclusion]The effect of temporary balloon occlusion of abdominal aorta was reliable. It sharply reduced the time of operations , the loss of blood , complications , mean daysin hospital, recovery days post-operation and recurrence rate. It made the operation of sacral tumors much more safer than before.
