Jinzhi Hanshuye includes 12 kinds of Chinese herbal medicine and has function of diminishing inflammation, ceasing pain, eliminating fever, detoxification and antibacterial effects especially for anaerobic. Experimental and clinical study of Jinzhi Hanshuye on infected root canals were discussed in this paper. This study was divided into two parts: experimental and clinical parts, with two experiments in part one. Experiment one focused on measuring MIC and MBC of Jinzhi Hanshuye for several bacterial strains, including P.gingivalis, P.intermedia, F.nucleatum. Experiment two evaluated antibacterial effectiveness of Jinzhi Hanshuye which is used as irrigating solution and intracanal medicament, in contrast with 1.5% Tosylchloramide Sodium irrigating and calcium hydroxide disinfecting root canals. Microbiological sampling was performed before treatment, after instrumentation and irrigation, and after intracanal medication. Frequency of positive culture and CFU of each culture were evaluated and analyzed statistically. Clinical study stressed therapeutic effect of Jinzhi Hanshuye. 240 teeth were randomly divided intoexperimental group and control group, with the same treatment described as above. Clinical therapeutic effect, treatment period, and clinical syndrome alteration after instrumentation were evaluated respectively. The results indicated: ?MIC of Jinzhi Hanshuye for P.gingivalis, P.intermedia, F.nucleatum were 1:2, 1:512, 1:8 respectively, while MBC were 1:1, 1:512, 1:8 respectively. ?Frequency of positive culture and CFU for obligate anaerobic declined step by step, while frequency of positive culture and CFU for facultative anaerobic decreased to rock bottom after instrumentation and increased after medication (P < 0.001) . There were no difference between two groups as regards to frequency of positive culture and CFU of culture (P>0.05 ) ? Clinical success rate of both groups were 99.2%. ?There were no difference between two groups as regards to treatment period, clinical syndrome alteration after instrumentation, and clinical therapeutic effect (P>0.05 )(§) No side effects of Jinzhi Hanshuye were found in this study.Based on these findings, conclusions were drawn as the following: ?Jinzhi Hanshuye had antibacterial effects especially for anaerobic. ?Jinzhi Hanshuye had the same disinfection effect as calcium hydroxide. (P>0.05 ) ?Jinzhi Hanshuye had the same clinical therapeutic effect as calcium hydroxide. (P>0.05)...
