PARTâ…  THE TASTE DEVELOPMENT ON THE NEWBORNS Objective To investigate the sensitivities of the newborns to the four solutions by the facial responses, and analyse the relations between the facial reactions of the newborns and the materials in the amniotic fluids. Methods 62 newborns(31 females and 31 males) born after 90 minutes in the Department of Obstetrics, First Hospital of the Chongqing University of Medical Sciences were studied by the four solutions, including 25%sucrose(sweet), 5%sodium chloride(salt), 1.43%lemon acid(sour), 0.25%berberine (bitter). The facial responses of the newborns were recorded by the video. The facial responses were divided into nine facical action units and expressions from A1 to C3,which are also expressed as the 1~9 intensities , crying was included as 9th intensity and the nausea was defined to the 10th intensity. The relations between facial responses and the materials in the amniotic fluids were analyzed by the correlation matrix. The distinctions of the facial responses were analyzed by the chi-square statistics. The distinctions of sex in the facial responses were analyzed by the Wilcoxon test. Results All the newborns were full term, singleton , excluding the medical conditions. The average of the birth weights on the newborns was 3324.3g. There was no relations between the times of the vomiting on the mothers during the early period of the pregnacy and the facial responses on the newborns. The data from the study indicated that the no distinctive mouth action and sucking was the major facial response on the infants to the sucrose solution(P<0.01). There were no special expressions when the newborns were given the salt solution(P>0.01).The lip pursing with negative brow and midface actions were major response of the infants to the sour solution(lemon acid)(P<0.01). The expressions to the bitter solution on the infants were the mouth gaping with negative brow and midface actions(P<0.01).The facial responses to the sweet and bitter solutions in the boys were more sensitive than that in the girls( p<0.01).There was no sex difference of the intensities of the facial responses to the salt and sour solution(sP>0.05). The data also showed that the concentrations of the glucose in the amniotic fluids of the mothers who favored the sweet foods during the pregnancy were higher than that in the mothers who were no special habits of the foods during the pregnancy(p>0.05).The values of pH in the amniotic fluids of the mother who favored the foods with sour during the pregnancy were higher than that in the mothers who were special taste favors during the pregnancy(P<0.01).There were the sensitive expressions to the sour and salt solutions on the faces of the infants whose mothers were no special habits of the foods during the pregnancy. Conclusions There was no relations between the times of the vomiting on the mothers and the facial expressions on the newborns. The values of pH and the concentrations of the glucose in the amniotic fluids could be changed by the intake foods of the mothers during the pregnancies, and which maybe influence the taste sensitivities of the newborns. The newborns could distinct the four solutions immediately after birth. The facial expression to sweet and bitter solutions in the boys were more sensitive than that in the girls. PART â…¡ A FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF THE TASTE DEVELOPMENT ON THE INFANTS Objective To investigate the sensitivities to the four solutions by the intensities of the responses on 0~8 month aged infants, and analyse the related factors . Methods 20 newborns(10 females and 10 males) were followed until 8 months for the taste development in the Department of Primary Child Care, Children's Hospital, of the Chongqing University of Medical Sciences. The intensities of the responses to the four solutions on the infants were analyzed by the Wilcoxon test. The newborns were divided into IS group(ISsalt,ISsour,ISbitter) and S group (Ssalt,Ssour,Sbitter) according to the sensibilities of the ne...
