ObjectiveFormaldehyde is one of the major indoor pollutants, the health effects of formaldehyde are irritating to eyes, nostril and upper respiratory mucous lining and allergic, mutation, carcinogenic and its effects on reproductive, nerve and immune systems. In order to study the effects of formaldehyde to central nervous system,we have determined the memory, lipid peroxidation, neurotransmitter and energy metabolism in the cerebral of mice.Methods24 male and 24 female Kunming mice obtained from animal center of Xinmin campuse of Jilin University. Body weight of the mice is(18 ± 2)g. Mice were placed in 4 groups at random, with 6 male and 6 female mice in each group.Mice were exposed to air(control condition) or formaldehyde(21.0mg/m3(1/24LC50), 42.0mg/m3 (1/12 LC50), 84.0mg/m3 (1/6 LC5o)).Mice were kept 12 weeks, for 2h per day,6d per week. Before exposed to formaldehyde and at. 4th week,8th week and 12th week, the indexes about the memory was determined. After 12th week, the mice were killed. Lipid peroxidation, neurotransmitter and energy metabolism in the cerebral tissue were determined.Statistics analysis of data were conducted using variance analysis.Date are mean ± standard deviation, and P<0.05and P<0.01 were accepted to be statistically significant.Results1 Effects of formaldehyde on the memory of miceAt the test of initiative escape,in I/6LC50 group, times of initiative escape significantly decreased compared with the control at 12th week (P<0.05) .At the test of responsiveness to stimuli of mice, At 12th week, times from bottom to flat in I/I2LC50 and I/6LC50group increased, and ,there was was significant difference with the control (P<0.05 or PO.01) .With extending of time of exposed FA,time of escape had changed. At 12th week, escaping time of l/6LC50 group significantly increased compared with 4th weekand 8th week (PO.05) .At the water maze test,at 8th week, times that I/6LC50 group achievedthe goal (PO.05) . At 8th week, time of 1/12LC5Ogroup and I/6LC50group significantly increased compared with the control group(PO.01) .And time of I/6LC50group compared with l/24LCso group(PO.01) . With extending of time of exposed FA,time of achieving thegoal changed. In I/6LC50 group, swimming time at 12th week significantlyincreased compared with 8th week (P<0.01) .2 Effects of formaldehyde on of the cerebral of mice, organ oefficient decreased in I/24LC50 group,l/12LC5o group and 1/6 LC50 group, but there was no significant differences compared with the control (P>0.05).3 Effects of formaldehyde on lipid peroxidation of mice: the activeness of SOD of cerebral tissue in exposed groups, there was significant difference in I/6LC50 group compared with the control (P<0.05),and the activeness of SOD in I/I2LC50 group significantly...
