Purpose This in vitro study examined the influence of fiber typers and wetting agents on the flexural properties of Solidex ceromer. We used two kinds of fiber wetting agent to preimpregnate three types of fiber, and then put the preimpregnated fibers into the ceromer to make a rectangular ceromer bar. Three-point bend test and moiréinterfereometery were applied to measure the flexural strength and elastic modulous. The reinforcement results were compared and the best combination of fiber and wetting agent were found. We aim to find the theory depending for free metal prosthetics and to find the new way for oral materials properties testing. Materials and methods Three types of fiber, ultra-high molecure weight polyethylene, Kevlar-49 and S-glass fiber, which were respectively treated by potassium dichromate solution, acetone and silane coupling agent and were preimpregnated by two different kinds of wetting agent(FL-Bond and Dura-Fill) respectively, were used to reinforce samples of Solidex ceromer prepared to test flexural properties. Each fiber type was used to prepare 2 groups of 13 specimens after fiber wetting with an unfilled or a filled resin bonding agent. All fibers were caculated to a volume of 2% to standardize the amount of fiber placed in the base tensile side of the specimen preparation mold (2mm×2mm ×25mm). One additional group of unreinforced ceromer served as control group, resulting in 7groups total. All the specimens were storaged in distilled water at 37℃for 24 hours before testing. Then make all the specimens dry and measure the dimention(each tested three times and get average value ) and record. Mean flexural strengths(MPa) values were determined in a 3-point bend test at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min by using of a universal testing machine. Mean elastic modulous were tested by moiréinterfereometery, and the frequency of grating was set at 150line/mm. Comparisons between means were performed with 1-way ANOVA tests(α=0.05) to demonstrate the influence of fiber type and wetting agent on the flexural properties of the Solidex ceromer tested by using SPSS statistical software. Results Significant increases in mean flexural strength(P < 0.01)and modulous were found for all fiber-reinforced group in comparison to the unreinforced control group. The flexural strength of group GD, GF, PD, PF, AD, AF was 193.7±11.4,174.3±32.1, 116.9±21.0,134.2±16.0,220.1±17.9,203.2±25.9 (MPa) respectively, and the modulous was 11.48,8.45,6.24,6.66,8.36,8.36(GPa) each. The order of reinforcement effect of the three kinds of fibers in flexural strength was Kevlar-49>S-Glass>UHMWPE, and it was S-Glass>Kevlar-49>UHMWPE in modulous. There was no siginificant difference between two kinds of wetting agents of FL-Bond and Dura-Fill for the fiber of Kevlar-49 and UHMWPE(P>0.05), but there was significant influence for S-Glass fiber(P<0.05). It was same with elastic modulous. Conclusions 1. These three types of fiber (Kevlar-49, S-Glass and UHMWPE)all increased the flexural strength of the Solidex ceromer. The fiber of Kevlar-49 increased most. 2. These three types of fiber all increased the elastic modulus of the Solidex ceromer too. The fiber of S-Glass increased most. 3. There are no difference in the effect of preimpregnation between the two wetting agents of DuraFill and FL-Bond to Kevlar-49 and UHMWPE. But to S-Glass, the effect of preimpregnation of DuraFill is much higher than FL-Bond.
