Object: to investigate the changes and correlations of brain evoked potentials in patients with epilepsy, and to evaluate the values of brain evoked potential techniques applied in this study. Methods: The patients with epilepsy who were interictal were examined by brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), visual evoked potentials (VEP), short latency someatosensory evoked potentials (SLSEP) and event related potentials(ERPs).The wave shape, latency and amplitude were examined. (1) as to BAEP, the values of peak latency of â… ,â…¡,â…¢,â…£,â…¤, and of inter-peak latency of â… -â…¢, â… -â…¤ ,â…¢-â…¤ were examined; (2) as to VEP, the values of peak latency of N75 P100 , N145 were examined ;(3) as to ERPs, the values of peak latency of N1, P2, N2 , P3 at the points of FZ, CZ , PZ were examined as well as the values of the amplitude of P3; (4) as to SLSEP, the values of peak latency of N20, P40 , P15, IN16, N16, N18, N19 were examined. Results: (1)as to BAEP, as compared with the control subjects, except for the value of the peak latency of V , and the value of the inter-peak latency of â…¢-â…¤ , the patients' values of peak latency of â… ,â…¡,â…¢,â…£ and the values of inter-peak latency of â… -â…¢, â… -â…¤ were significantly delayed. BAEP were effected by the frequency of seizure and anti-epileptic drugs (AEDS); (2)as to VEP, as compared with the control subjects, the patients' values of the peak latency of N75, P100, N145 were significantly delayed. the wave shapes divided were worse than those of the control subjects. VEP were effected by the abnormality of cranial CT/MRI, course of disease and AEDs; (3)as to ERPs, as compared with the control subjects, the patients'values of the peak latency of N^ P2% N2 n P3 at the point of CZ were significantly delayed and the value of the amplitude of P3 was significantly decreased as well. The wave shapes divided of Nx> P2> N2 % P3 were worse than those of the control subjects. ERPs were effected by the course of disease, the abnormality of cranial CT/MRI and AEDs; ? as to SLSEP, as compared with the control subjects, except for P4o> Nig -. N19, the patients'values of the peak latency of N2o^ P^ IN16 -. N16 were significantly delayed. The wave shapes divided were worse than those of the control subjects. SLSEP were effected by the abnormality of cranial CT/MRI > electroencephalography> course of disease and AEDs.conclusions: patients with epilepsy have some brain dysfunctions . Thus, some components of BEPs are abnormal. It is sound to evaluate the brain functions in patients with epilepsy by using different techniques of BEPs. BEPs are valuable to direct the treatment and to evaluate the prognosis in patients with epilepsy by tracing and comparing.
