Objective: To evaluate the value of in vitro High-Resolution Magic angle Spinning proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HRMAS~1H-MRS) in the differentiation from gliomas to meningiomas and characterizing spectral patterns that may be helpful to grade glial tumors.Materials and Methods: 21 gliomas and 11 meningiomas were confirmed by surgical pathology. In them, 21 gliomas were divided into three groups: benign group(n=10), transitive group (n=5) and malignant group(n=6), which were analyzed by HRMAS~1H-MRS. The HRMAS~1H-MRS measurement was performed on a 600-MHz NMR spectrometer at room temperature. On the basis of these HRMAS~1H-MRS spectra, we measured the concentration of 10 metabolites, such as NAA,PCr/Cr, Cho, Glu/Gln, Gly, Tau, mI, Ala, Lac, Lip and the ratios of 9 metabolites to Cr.Results: (l)By the compare of three gliomas groups, the Cho/Cr ratios existed significant difference from benign group to transitive group and from benign group to malignant group (P<0.05 and P<0.001), but no significant difference between transitive group and malignant group. The Tau/Cr ratio also existed significant difference from malignant group to benign group and from malignant group to transitive group(P<0.05 and P<0.05), but no significant difference between benign group and transitive group. The Gly /Cr ratio was only the significant difference between benign group and malignant group (P<0.05).The ratios of NAA/Cr,Ala/Cr, mI/Cr, Glu-Gln/Cr, Lac/Cr and Lip/Cr were no significant difference among the three groups(P>0.05). (2) Between gliomas group and meningiomas group, the ratios of Cho/Cr, NAA/Cr, Ala/Cr, Tau/Cr, Glu-gln/Cr, Lac/Cr existed significant difference (P<0.05), the ratios of mI/Cr, Lip/Cr, Gly/Cr was insignificant difference.Conclusions: HRMAS~1H-MRS is able to present plentiful biochemical data of gliomas and meningiomas. It exists unique value in the differentiation from gliomas to meningiomas and evaluation of glial tumor grading.
